Artist Statement
My body of work is comprised of photography and oil paintings that explore themes of, identity, contemporaneity, and the human condition. These three elements are the driving force behind my art practice. I consider myself a “hyper-contemporary” artist whose main objective is to investigate my relationship to the world around me.
Both photography and painting are at the foundation of the way I navigate and understand my life. I find security in the way photography creates documentation and captures a moment in time that I feel might slip through the cracks. Photography is a medium that is very near to my heart. I find immense value in the dichotomy it holds; I am a very sentimental person and I think being able to freeze a moment in time is one of the greatest gifts. I also find value in the fact that I am able to tell a story without using any words, that feels incredibly special to me. I often struggle with staying present in the moment and the process of photography allows me to focus on my surroundings intently, if only for a moment. Oil painting is a more recent development of mine, I find the use of such a historic art form to convey modern day philosophies portrays a fascinating juxtaposition. My inspirations include a wide variety of artists, mainly Nan Goldin, David LaChapelle, and the Old Masters. The relationship that artists hold towards the portrayal of the human form is precious and deserves to be celebrated. Portraits make up a large percentage of my portfolio as a result. I’m also quite interested in the current intersection of social media, technology, and the impact of both on art and humankind.
The three main characteristics I would use to describe my work would be bright colors, high contrast, and an air of contemplation. I enjoy creating works that feel bold, in your face, and push the boundaries a bit. I would say I follow trends in a sort of tongue-in-cheek kind of way. I have my finger on the pulse but feel the need to break the mold, to challenge preconceived notions. I’m very methodical and precise in terms of execution, I pay great attention to the composition of each piece. I enjoy sparking dialogue, creating conversation pieces, and theorizing art in and of itself.
Overall, my art practice offers me a sort of metaphorical asylum in which I can escape to in times of need. I believe my unique intersection of the universe is worth sharing and I feel grateful to those along for the ride.
